The sixth edition of the MONDO ECO literature festival, dedicated to ecological, social, and cultural sustainability, is in full swing. Organized by Il Crogiuolo, under the artistic direction of Rita Atzeri, and with the support of the Sardinia Region’s Department of Culture (Book Heritage Service) and the Municipality of Cagliari, the festival is once again highly diverse this year, with a rich program, the highlight of which runs from November 17th to December 5th, featuring a rich program of meetings with authors of national and regional standing. Mondo Eco is a long-running festival, which kicked off last April with a series of previews spread out over the past few months. <\/p>

Guest authors include Milena Agus, Angelo Turco, Angelica Pastorella, Lucia Tancredi, Alessandro Aresu, Daniela Annetta, Cristina Nadotti, Valentino Mannias, Paolo Massari, and Riccardo Crivelli. The festival traditionally offers, in addition to the strictly literary section, various activities, particularly those promoting reading in schools, workshops, and performances. <\/p>

Mondo Eco, with the primary goal of promoting reading, intends to further raise awareness of the topic of sustainability, as usual addressed in all its aspects: ecological, social, cultural, and political. In its sixth edition, the festival is supported by a scientific committee, with the contribution of Duilio Caocci, professor of Italian Literature at the University of Cagliari, and Cristina Batteta, bookseller and literary expert. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Mondo Eco 2025 has significantly chosen “Survival” as its theme, which is developed through the thematic panels that have distinguished the festival since its inception: Environment, Politics, and Sustainability. Following on from previous editions, these areas of reflection will be addressed and explored by industry experts, professors, and researchers, who will share their studies, experiences, and activities, as well as by writers and journalists, who will share their perspectives through their books. The locations are increasingly widespread throughout the region: Cagliari, Casa Saddi in Pirri is the festival’s hub, but also Quartucciu (the Mariposa de Cardu Garden and Juvenile Penal Institute), in Marmilla (Baressa), in several municipalities in Ogliastra (such as Tertenia, Tortol\u00ec, Ulassai), in Nuoro and Sulcis (in Carbonia, Carloforte, Santadi, Calasetta, among others). <\/p>

\u201cThe sixth edition of Mondo Eco is dedicated to the theme of \u2018survival’: that humanity is racing toward self-destruction is so evident that it becomes redundant to say so,\u201d underlines Rita Atzeri, explaining the festival’s concept. This is demonstrated by the wars, the painful situation in Palestine, land consumption, ongoing energy speculation, and the fascist resurgence we are witnessing. The standardization of consumer society, which Pasolini spoke of, in terms of the emptying of consciences and the ‘fascistization’ of society, has occurred. Can we do something to slow the rush to the abyss? Yes, we can. By trying to rekindle consciences, proposing themes for discussion, and presenting paths forward. Mondo Eco has already done so in its previews, featuring books like Lorenzo Guadagnucci’s ‘L’altra memoria’ (The Other Memory), which reminds us of the meaning that remembering fascist massacres today must have: not commemoration but action against wars; or Paolo Pileri’s ‘Dalla parte del suolo’ (On the Side of the Soil), which allows us to reflect on the abuses against land protection that we have witnessed and continue to witness; or, again, with books like Letizia Palmisano’s ‘Sette vite come i gatti’ (Seven Lives Like Cats), which invites us to recycle and reuse.<\/p>

Il Crogiuolo has decided to invest further in an original festival, with a diverse network of partners. This year, the collaboration with key cultural and educational institutions, such as schools and libraries, continues. A significant network of collaborations has been consolidated, with organizations, institutions, volunteer associations, cultural and entertainment organizations, literary festivals, and the Monte Claro Library Systems (Cagliari Metropolitan City) and the Ogliastra Library Systems. Meetings with the authors<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mondo Eco, as anticipated, kicked off some time ago with a series of previews. The festival kicks off on Monday, November 17<\/strong>, at 6:00 p.m., at the Businco Oncology Hospital in Cagliari. The protagonist is Giampaolo Cadalanu, journalist and writer, a longtime special correspondent for La Repubblica, with “Under the Sand. Libya, Oil, Italy” (Laterza, 2025), presented by Luca Borzoni, professor of History of International Relations. The event is in collaboration with the Department of Political Science – Decolonizing the Future – Departmental Theme 2026. <\/p>

Libya has been in a permanent and endless civil war for nearly fifteen years. A “great game” in which the world’s powers\u2014from Russia to Turkey, from the United States to the Gulf states\u2014are playing to get their hands on the immense treasure hidden beneath the sand: oil. And how is Italy involved? How much is it at risk on its former “fourth shore”? <\/p>

On October 20, 2011, Muammar al-Gaddafi was captured and killed. Since the end of the regime established by the Colonel and his “Green Revolution,” Libya has been in a never-ending agony. How many lies were told to justify Western intervention in Libya? Why did Italy participate in the attack just two years after signing the Treaty of Friendship with Tripoli? Giampaolo Cadalanu uses exclusive testimonies, firsthand accounts, expert analysis, and data comparisons to demonstrate that what moved the West, far more than the protection of Libyans, were and still are concrete interests: subsoil resources and the balance of power. <\/p>

On Tuesday the 18th<\/strong>, the Faculty of Humanities (Room 9A of the Adjunct Building) will host Angelo Turco at 3:30 pm for his presentation “Mediology of Territoriality” (Unicopli, 2025). Professor Emeritus of Geography, he taught at the Polytechnic University of Milan and at IULM University, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Tourism and Markets. He will be in conversation with Marcello Tanca, professor of Geography at the University of Cagliari. The meeting will also be streamed on the Crogiuolo Facebook page and will be translated into Sign Language (LIS) by Luciana Ledda. <\/p>

The birth and death of a hurricane in newspapers, on television and on social media. How do we decipher war rhetoric and neocolonial cultures? And when we say “Climate Conference,” what are we referring to: what has happened, what is promised? Turco’s book addresses the mediated existence of territories: in globalized societies and local communities. A new geographical perspective on a world that doesn’t need to be real to exist, but simply needs to be slightly realistic.
Afterward, Angelica Pastorella will present “There is no life without water” (Unicopli, 2025). With a degree in Oriental languages \u200b\u200band cultural anthropology, she is now one of the cultural experts and leading guides for Kel 12, a tour operator specializing in cultural and sustainable travel to every corner of the world. The mountainous region of Ladakh, in northern India, known for its high-altitude deserts, is a concrete example of what climate change is impacting. Around the majestic glaciers of the area, where nature, culture, tradition, and economy have always been interconnected, the progressive disappearance of this solid water is now putting the lives and identity of the people who live here into crisis. <\/p>

On November 19th,<\/strong> at 5 pm, live-streamed only on the Crogiuolo Facebook page, Lucia Tancredi, professor of literature and writer, presents “Everything is for Giulia. Antonio Gramsci and Giulia Schucht: a love story” (Ponte alle Grazie, 2024). The fateful meeting between Antonio and Giulia takes place in a Russian sanatorium in 1922: Gramsci, hospitalized in serious condition while participating in the work of the Communist International, meets Giulia Schucht, a talented violinist, who has come to visit his sister Eugenia. It is love at first sight: the two meet again in Moscow, become lovers, and later husband and wife. Tancredi recounts Giulia’s heartbreak as she gives up music for Antonio, her worry for him, constantly on the run from the fascists, her desire to be close to him, and her frustrated aspiration for a normal life. Antonio manages to spend time with his first child, but never sees his second because he is arrested. In Gramsci’s final years, in prison, it was Giulia’s sister, Tatiana, who was the one receiving his letters. The sisters play an important role in this story, as both Eugenia and Tatiana were infatuated with Antonio. He loved only Giulia, and before dying, he left her all his papers, demonstrating not only his great passion for her, but also his admiration for her intelligence and political zeal. <\/p>

Lucia Trancredi will also discuss her book “Ersilia and the Others. An Extraordinary Story of Women and Girls at the Dawn of Feminism” (Ponte alle Grazie, 2025), hosted by journalist Federica Ginesu.<\/p>

Also on Wednesday the 19th, at 6:00 PM, at the Lazzaretto di Sant’Elia, Gianluca Scroccu, university professor of Contemporary History, will speak about “Sandro Pertini,” soon to be published by Salerno Editrice, accompanied by Enrico Trogu, director of the State Archives. Pertini: his consistency was central to his courageous anti-fascist opposition, even when he was sentenced to long prison sentences and confinement, just as it would be in the resistance struggle and his commitment to post-1945 Italian socialism. His relationship with his party would always be crucial; as a reformist socialist, he held no leadership positions within the party, was never called to government roles, but was always extremely respected. The turning point came in 1968, when he became a man of the institutions, first as President of the Chamber of Deputies until 1976, then as President of the Republic from 1978 to 1985. His seven-year term entered the myth and memory of Italians during the era of terrorism because he knew how to interpret and defend the role of democratic institutions with authority and autonomy from the political class. <\/p>

At 7 pm, Milena Agus, a renowned storyteller (born in Genoa to Sardinian parents, lives in Cagliari), will present her book “Notte di vento che passa” (Mondadori, 2024), accompanied by actor and director Fabio Marceddu. The author of “Mal di petre” tells the story of Cosima and the most memorable year of her life, the year she turns eighteen and experiences “so many things for the first or last time.” The resulting novel is full of wonder and literature, recounting the universal tension between the desire to dream and the need to live in the real world, to inhabit it, reality. The author’s writing displays her usual clarity, but also a profound linguistic exploration: her original and almost childlike gaze makes us laugh and marvel at the same time, as sometimes happens when children or wise men tell the truth. <\/p>

The following day, Thursday the 20th<\/strong>, at 6 pm, Casa Saddi in Pirri will host Alessandro Aresu with “China has won” (Feltrinelli, 2025). This meeting, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science – Decolonizing the Future – Departmental Theme 2026, will also be livestreamed on the Crogiuolo Facebook page. Moderator: Barbara Onnis, professor of Asian History and Institutions, translated into Italian Sign Language (LIS) by Luciana Ledda.
Aresu, a geopolitical analyst and expert in public strategy and policy, has worked as an advisor, consultant, and manager for institutions such as the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs, and is a Times magazine contributor. He collaborates with several major newspapers. In his book, he highlights how the West is obsessed with China, yet often views it through inadequate interpretative frameworks. “China has won” is not a rhetorical statement, but a methodical provocation: to understand where we are going, we must decipher Chinese strategic thinking, its historical origins, its industrial logic, and its instruments of global influence. Aresu traces the trajectories of Beijing’s technopolitical power, describing the transformations in the relationship between state, capital, technical knowledge, and global ambitions. This narrative goes beyond mainstream storytelling about the “empire of control,” offering us a portrait of China as a laboratory and mirror of our future. <\/p>

On November 21st<\/strong>, at 6 pm, again at Casa Saddi, Mauro Liggi, a doctor, poet, and photographer from Cagliari, will present his book “Alla terra i miei occhi” (My Eyes to the Earth) (Interno Libri, 2025) together with Duilio Caocci. A book of resilience, a journey through fragility and grief that does not erase the wonder of life’s mystery. In the darkness of loss, carnal love is the answer to death. The soul filled with wonder, helpless but not surrendered to unhappiness, always finds a path to beauty, in the small things around it, in open spaces of hope.
At 7 pm, Daniela Annetta, a graphic designer specializing in publishing and the Italian curator of “Sacred Instructions: Indigenous Wisdom for a Transformation Based on the Vital Spirit” (Multimage, 2024) by Sherri Mitchell, a lawyer, activist, and author from the Penobscot Nation, an indigenous people of Maine, North America. Drawing on ancestral knowledge, as well as her experience as a lawyer and activist, Mitchell addresses some of the most crucial issues of our time, such as environmental protection and human rights. The invitation is to act to save the planet and all living beings, to return to living together in harmony and balance according to the sacred teachings of her Native American ancestors. The author recounts the sacred teachings of the ancients and prophecies for the future, and in this book she recalls the lifestyles and traditions that her tribe has managed to preserve.
Next up is Fiorella Carollo, an orientalist with a background in anthropology, a scholar of feminist thought and women’s cinema. “Resistances. From Gaza to Afghanistan to Myanmar” (Multimage, 2025) is the title of the book she will present. The work focuses on forms of resistance in various areas of the world, including Gaza, Afghanistan, and Myanmar.
Also on Friday the 21st, at 4:15 pm, the Lussu Library will host a meeting organized in collaboration with the Monte Claro Library System of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari (accessible by car from Via Romagna – Cittadella della Salute Access – Giovanni Lilliu Hall). The theme is “Volunteering in Africa,” with the presentation of the book “With Africa. Stories of People Building the Future” by journalist Giuseppe Ragogna (Ediciclo, 2024), in collaboration with Doctors with Africa CUAMM, hosted by journalist and writer Giulia Clarkson. Speakers will include Luciano Cara, a doctor with the “Gruppo Volontari Sardi Karibu Africa odv,” and Gabriele Galassi (via remote access), who will share his experience of civil service in Africa. <\/p>

Myriam Mereu, a researcher in Philological and Literary Studies at the University of Cagliari, will be the author present on November 22nd<\/strong> at Casa Saddi, at 7:00 PM. She will discuss with Nicole Merche her book “Le voci dello schermo. Le lingue del cinema sardo contemporaneo” (Mimesis, 2024), a topic in which she specializes. This seven-chapter study analyzes the linguistic component of contemporary Sardinian cinema and aims to study how language changes in the transition to film production. <\/p>

On November 23<\/strong>, at 6 pm, at the Businco Hospital in Cagliari, Franciscu Sedda, semiologist, professor at the University of Cagliari, and writer, will present \u201cThe Unpredictable Happens\u201d (Bompiani, 2025) in conversation with Paolo Sorrentino, also a semiologist.<\/p>

A journey through the turbulence of our time: from politics to climate, from economics to media, from science to art, our daily lives are filled with constant surprises, both large and small, that often disorient us, sometimes enlighten us, and almost always challenge us. To face the unpredictable without being overwhelmed, we need new perspectives, agile tools, and updated maps, which Sedda seeks to offer in his book. The meeting will also be livestreamed (Crogiuolo’s Facebook page), translated into Italian by Luciana Ledda.
Following this, at 7 pm, the excellent Valentino Mannias, a well-trained theater, film, and television actor, accompanied by Italian scholar Andrea Cannas, will talk about “Il mostro,” the highly successful Netflix miniseries that reconstructs the “Sardinian trail” of the Monster of Florence, the serial killer responsible for eight double homicides between 1968 and 1985. Mannias plays the enigmatic role of a central character in the story, Salvatore Vinci, a Sardinian transplanted to Tuscany. <\/p>

Vindice Lecis, journalist and writer, will be at Casa Saddi on November 25th<\/strong> at 6:00 pm to discuss “La rivolta” (Condaghes, 2025), hosted by Duilio Caocci.
After the bloody Battle of Lutocisterna in February 1324, the Catalan-Aragonese conquest of Sardinia seemed unstoppable. In June of the same year, the Pisans renounced all their possessions on the island except Castel di Castro. Sheltered by its walls, they needed to respond to the exhausting attacks of the Catalan-Aragonese settled on the hill south-east of Castello, where they began to build the fortified citadel called Bonaria. The fate of Sardinia will be decided more by cynical calculations than by the naval clash between Pisa and Aragon that will take place in the Gulf of Cagliari between 1325 and 1326.<\/p>

On Saturday the 29th<\/strong>, at 5:30 p.m., at the Businco Oncology Hospital, “Tourism That Doesn’t Pay” by Cristina Nadotti, journalist, writer, and traveler. Cristina Nadotti, who has worked for La Repubblica for over 20 years, has covered foreign affairs, international cooperation, and ecological transition. She has chosen Sardinia as her adopted home. Moderator: Giulia Clarkson. <\/p>

In a world where travel has become more accessible than ever, we rarely stop to ask who suffers the consequences of mass tourism. Nadotti dismantles the myth of tourism as an engine of infinite growth, exposing its dark side: from the pressure on local communities to the destruction of ecosystems, to the impact on the economies of the most visited destinations. What happens when a city becomes a “city of art,” a town an “authentic village,” and a beach an “Instagrammable location”? The book offers a critical and well-researched analysis of the contradictions of the phenomenon of overtourism and the socioeconomic and environmental impact it has on our country. <\/p>

On Thursday, December 4<\/strong>, at 5:30 pm, in collaboration with the Antonio Gramsci Association, which is hosting the meeting in Cagliari, Vittorio Pelligra, professor of Economic Policy at the University of Cagliari, and Fabio Angei, a PhD student in Economics and a collaborator at Crenos, will lead a seminar on the book by Japanese philosopher Saito Kohei, “Capital in the Anthropocene” (Einaudi, 2024). Coordinator: Laura Stochino, history and philosophy teacher and head of teaching at the Sardinian Institute for the History of Anti-Fascism and Contemporary Society (streamed live, with translation into Italian sign language by Luciana Ledda).
Capitalism will not lead us out of the crisis, Kohei argues. Any economic recipe based on continuous growth leads to the destruction of the planet. The only option is to put on the brakes. And Marx, in this regard, has something to teach us, the political-economic manifesto that all left-wing parties around the world must grapple with. In a period of eco-anxiety, in which increasingly extreme phenomena force us to reckon with the habitability of certain parts of the globe and the sustainability of our way of life, Saito bursts into the debate with courageous, radical, and thoughtful proposals. Techno-utopianism, the Green New Deal and the superficial environmentalism of companies are not the solution. And the small, daily gestures of individuals aren’t enough: resources are limited, and the problem of inequality must be addressed. We need to return to the essentials, to concrete things, to community. Rediscover what Marx called “the metabolic relationship between man and nature.” <\/p>

On the night of November 2, 1975, just over five decades ago, the tragic end of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s life took place. Also on Thursday the 4th, at the Lazzaretto di Sant’Elia, the Mondo Eco festival will commemorate one of the most important, yet controversial, Italian intellectuals of the last century, certainly one of the most multifaceted: poet, novelist, critic, polemicist, playwright, screenwriter, and film director. At 7:30 pm, writer Paolo Massari\u2014a researcher in Italian Studies at Sapienza University of Rome\u2014will discuss his book “The Intellectuals’ Holiday. Pasolini, Moravia, and the Sabaudia Circle” (Utet, 2025). He will be joined in conversation by journalist and writer Massimiliano Messina.
“I chose Sabaudia as a spiritual place for my forced rest and my anxieties about future work, furious dreams that keep me anchored to the world.” With these words, Pasolini described his relationship with Sabaudia, where he had bought a house with Alberto Moravia. That place, once a symbol of the fascist regime’s resourcefulness, became a few years later the favorite haunt of the Italian intelligentsia: thus, one can encounter Moravia shopping at the fishmonger’s, Bernardo Bertolucci and Ian McEwan discussing the script of a film that was never made, Laura Betti strolling with Dario Bellezza, Jean Genet hunting for signatures on a petition for Palestine. Massari has a privileged perspective: his great-uncle founded the town library, and he met and conversed with the protagonists of this story. Aided by archival documents and the words of witnesses such as Dacia Maraini, Alain Elkann, and Edoardo Albinati, Massari reconstructs the moment when Sabaudia became one of the avant-garde centers of Italian art, cinema, and literature: the focal point from which to observe postwar cultural history. <\/p>

This will be followed by the recital “The Dream of a Thing. Fifty Years Later, Pasolini,” curated by Massimiliano Messina, in collaboration with the Cineteca Sarda. A sort of “docu-reading,” whose title evokes the Bolognese writer’s first novel, with staged readings by Mario Faticoni (Messina selected the texts, images, and music). Pasolini will be remembered first and foremost as a poet, then as a novelist and essayist, but also as a director (as Moravia did in his famous funeral oration): a montage of images from some of his most important films, along with excerpts from documentaries dedicated to him, will accompany the reading. <\/p>

The core of the sixth edition of the Mondo Eco festival concludes on December 5th at 6:00 PM with Riccardo Crivelli, journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport, and his talk “Jannik Sinner. The talent that is changing the history of tennis” (Diarkos, 2025). The event, presented by Roberto Pintor, will be hosted at a unique location, the perfect setting to showcase the “Sinner phenomenon”: the Monte Urpinu Tennis Club in Cagliari.
Born in the Puster Valley, on the border with Austria, Jannik Sinner embarked on an extraordinary journey that took him from the Alpine mountains to the pinnacle of world tennis. Crivelli’s book tells his story, one of passion, determination, and constant growth. From a young age, Jannik had to choose between his love of skiing and his talent for tennis. At thirteen, picking up a racket, he embarked on a journey that would take him far from home, a step that would mark the beginning of his rise to greatness, embracing a rigorous philosophy of life: education, humility, and a work ethic instilled in him by his family. His victories in the most important tournaments, his four Grand Slam titles, cemented his name in the history of sport. Crivelli not only celebrates the triumphs of a champion, but invites us to discover his essence, that of a boy who, with quiet talent and unwavering dedication, is destined to remain on the world tennis stage for years, ready to become an icon, an example of how hard work and perseverance can turn a dream into reality. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Reading animation, workshops for schools, shows<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the highlights of the Mondo Eco literary festival is the meeting with the project’s partner schools and libraries. A love of reading begins in school, and it’s there that critical reading, interpretation, and analysis should begin. In Cagliari, the Santa Caterina Comprehensive School, the I Pini School, and the Leopardi Middle School in Pirri have already held reading workshops and activities.
The Northern Ogliastra Integrated Library System (in towns such as Tertenia, Tortol\u00ec, and Ulassai) is fully involved. This edition also sees the collaboration with the Monte Claro Library System of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. The “E. Lussu” Library will host some of the festival’s activities, such as meetings with experts on the event’s central themes and reading promotion workshops.

As part of Mondo Eco 2025, projects dedicated to Sergio Atzeni (a literary walk through the Cagliari neighborhoods of Is Mirrionis and San Michele, inspired by his works) were held in schools on the theme of the Resistance, and the “Books in a Carriage” initiative was held on the Trenino Verde on the Macomer-Bosa route. Literary teas with authors were also held at the “Vittorio Emanuele” nursing home in Pirri, along with readings and book presentations. In December, immediately after Christmas, activities are planned at the Quartucciu Juvenile Correctional Institution. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
