Culture and memory in Cagliari: Ascanio Celestini opens the preview of the Mondo Eco Literary Festival 2026 On August 20th, the EXMA will host the presentation of the book “Pasolini. One Life, or Rather Two.” A journey through history, theater, and political commitment in collaboration with the Incipit Festival. CAGLIARI, AUGUST 8, 2026 – The Mondo Eco Literary Festival is gearing up for its 2026 edition and is announcing a prestigious preview. On Thursday, August 20th, at 8:00 PM, the EXMA’ in Cagliari (Via San Lucifero 71) will host the renowned director, playwright, and writer Ascanio Celestini for the presentation of his highly anticipated book: “Pasolini. One Life, or Rather Two.” The event is free to attend and is held in collaboration with the Incipit Festival, confirming an increasingly close collaboration between the main cultural events in the area. The Book: A Dual Portrait of Pasolini In “Pasolini. One Life, or Rather Two,” Ascanio Celestini does not simply write a biography, but constructs a powerful and polyphonic narrative around one of the most central, complex, and controversial figures of twentieth-century Italy. The story unfolds to explore the two “bodies” of Pier Paolo Pasolini: on the one hand, the private one—the man, the poet, the son, the friend—and on the other, the public one—the political, intellectual, and tragically massacred body, transformed over time into an iconic symbol. Through this split, Celestini delves into the contradictions of last-century Italy, offering the reader a Pasolini who is extraordinarily lucid, alive, and dramatically relevant. The Author: The Voice of Narrative Theater Ascanio Celestini is considered one of the leading exponents of narrative theater in Italy. A director, actor, and writer, for decades he has dedicated his artistic research to collective memory, the stories of the most vulnerable, and the unresolved issues of recent Italian history. With a rare civic sensitivity and a unique language, capable of blending popular and literary registers, Celestini transforms memory into a critical mirror of our present. Event Details The event will be held in the evocative outdoor setting of EXMA’ in Cagliari. The Mondo Eco festival thus reaffirms its core mission: to explore the connections between culture, society, and memory, offering the public accessible and high-quality opportunities for discussion.
Pasolini laid bare, at odds with his own time – and ours. Ascanio Celestini takes on Pasolini in a head-
to-head battle with history. The result is a book that is urgent, necessary and uncomfortable.
Unvarnished. Unapologetic.
if you take Pasolini’s entire body of work, from his first childhood poem to the very last frame of
‘Salò’, you get the portrait of Italian history from the end of fascism to the mid-1970s. Vincenzo
Cerami had understood this, but Ascanio Celestini takes it a step further: let’s turn it into a game. A
real game, a dangerous gamble, which forces us to face up to our contradictions.
1964: Italy’s economic boom is already crumbling, a coup d’état is being plotted, and what does
Pasolini do? He makes “The Gospel According to Matthew”. Provocation? Escapism? Or a vision so
lucid it can see two millennia of history all at once?
March 1968, Valle Giulia: students clash with the police, and Pasolini dares to write, ‘I sympathised
with the police’. And a few lines later, ‘We are, of course, in agreement against the institution of the
police’. Betrayal? Madness? Or the only Italian intellectual who had the courage to reject the truisms
of his own time? The challenge, then, is to place Pasolini back in his own time. A time that was brief
yet full of life. And which today we can view in its entirety, from start to finish. Let’s put an end to
pointless questions such as ‘I wonder what Pasolini would say today’ about the destruction of Gaza,
state capitalism in China or the war in Ukraine, the internet and social media! Instead, let’s tell the
story of Pasolini´s many facets: the Friulian poet and the Roman filmmaker, the rogue intellectual
and the fragile man, the prophet of consumer society and the victim of violence in one of the great
Italian mysteries. Ascanio Celestini seeks to rediscover the poet’s gaze. Only in this way does Pasolini
remain a living presence, essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the contradictions of
the present.
