Il Crogiuolo is a professional performing arts company operating out of Casa Saddi at Via Fieramosca 17 in Pirri. Founded in 1982 by Mario Faticoni, who served as its artistic director and president until April 2017, Il Crogiuolo, currently directed by Rita Atzeri, pursues an artistic production focused on issues of civic and social engagement. The company’s full name is, in fact, Il Crogiuolo Centro di intervento teatrale (Theatre Intervention Center). In our view, theater has the historical and cultural mission of offering audiences a key to understanding contemporary life. The company’s flagship productions include national premieres of plays such as Pinter’s “The Greenhouse,” Ginzburg’s “Dialogue,” Coover’s “Spanking the Maid,” and, more recently, the premiere of “The Herodias,” starring Maria Paiato and directed by Pierpaolo Sepe; the co-production with the Filodrammatici of Milan of Mario Capanna’s “Formidable Those Years,” starring Giulio Casale; “Fuochi,” written and directed by Serena Sinigaglia, starring Iaia Forte and Rita Atzeri; and the premiere of “The Land of the Bull Men,” starring Marco Taddei and starring Arianna Scommegna. In addition to producing and distributing its own plays, the company organizes prose and children’s theater reviews, festivals, training courses, and theater workshops.
