AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE. A BURIED SECRET. THE STORY OF TWO WOMEN UNITED BY DESTINY.
In Sardinia, on the night between All Saints’ Day and November 2nd, tables are set to welcome the deceased. For sa chena pro sos mortos, the finest embroidered tablecloths and festive dishes are brought out, and the air fills with the scents of herbs and bread, awaiting the souls to return to the homes they loved. Iride Dessì no longer remembers all this. For years, she has lived far from Padria, the village in the rugged yet luminous heart of Meilogu, where she grew up. It was only her father’s death that brought her back. In the grand home of the Dessìs, wealthy landowners of Padria, everything has remained as it was, and in the rooms filled with memories, one can almost hear the ancestors whispering. It is Tata, the woman who cared for her as a child, guardian of ancient knowledge and secrets never revealed, who guides Iride through the shadows that seem to inhabit every corner. And which demand to be heard…
By chance or fate, an old photograph, yellowed by time, prompts Iride to leaf through the pages of the great book of the past and encounter Mimì Oppes, a rebellious great-great-grandmother destined for an unhappy marriage. Thus, Iride retraces a story that has the flavor of legend, reliving the deep friendship between Mimì and Elizabeth Hope, an incredibly free and independent Englishwoman, and the overwhelming and unexpected love affair with Emanuele Manca, a legendary bandit who was the talk of Padria.
Constructed like a Wuthering Heights-style Chinese box game, mixing family memories and fictional inventions, The Supper of Souls spans centuries and generations, delving into the heart of a mysterious Sardinia, where life and death, past and present still walk side by side.
